The Message Behind Music Videos
(Sunday 17th November)
Music videos today are not just about the musical talent a musician or band has, rather, it has become a statement of many different kinds. Us Image Culture folk love our music and we're constantly keeping our eye out for new and outstanding talent in the field, however this is getting hard when the bums, breasts and just a bit too much flesh are tainting our vision. The question is, are these videos morally correct? Let's begin with Miley Cyrus- A childhood star who was thrown into the limelight from an early age and who undoubtedly had a little help from her famous father. Her famous role, Hannah Montana became a child's best friend, she was cool, angelic, she had everything any teenager could want and dream of but was still so kind and a good role model. Her music career started well with High School Musical sounding innocent songs. A couple of years later, what happened? It seems in the last few months the majority of the celebrity news is evolved around something more outrageous that Miley has done, galavanting around stage in her underwear- dry humping Robin Thicke, getting her breasts out for the cameras and riding a massive ball naked in her music video. Miley Cyrus' music video Wrecking Ball has certainly got people talking, but not for a good reason, but any publicity is good publicity right? This is no longer the role model that children should aspire to be, yet so many still do. Wrecking Ball shows Miley ONCE AGAIN moping around in her underwear licking phallic objects such as the hammer and wrecking ball and seducing the camera. Not only that but she teases the audience with near misses of seeing a little bit more than we bargained for! This music video is not about the music, it has become a soft porn for the visually weak to gawp at. Moving on swiftly, Kanye West has just become another contender for the most outrageous music video of the year with Bound 2 portraying his 'soul mate' Kim Kardashian in a sense of euphoria when she rides his *metaphor* motorbike. Once again we are teased with plenty of side boob and a lot of face expressions that show her being a little too happy to be on that bike. The constant interruption of female "vocals" throughout this video makes it unbearable to listen to. Putting the visuals and sound together, Bound 2 is another soft porn that could over excite a majority of its audience. And last but certainly not least is Britney Spears' Work Bitch. Where to begin... this video promotes women using their bodies for Capital gain,; "you want a lamborghini? Sip martinis? Look hot in bikini's? You better work bitch!" This video is an abundance of bondage, leathers and women using their assets to get what they want. As well as all of this, the lack of control the dancers have in this video, being tied up, on a leash, gagged and whipped, gives the perverse minds of the viewers a sense of power in watching this video.
