Interview with Skip Davies
(Thursday 21st November)
On Thursday, Skip visited The Image Culture hub for some promotional photographs for his music. But before we began, we pinned him down and asked him a few questions. With the success of the interview with Sean London, we kept to the same questions to further our research of the connection between musicians and the fashion industry. We opened the interview by asking, Does your choice of clothing reflect the genre of your music? Why is important to wear certain clothes? and immediately we knew we were in for a treat! He told us, Music being such a big part of my life makes it bound to other choices; we are Influenced by the things that surround us. I'd say seeing certain artists wearing certain clothing items can raise your awareness of styles of various sub cultures, from which you form your own image. Words seem to come easily to skip and he was passionate to tell us his opinions, his opinion gave us insight also. We followed on to ask him, If your manager/record label told you to completely change your image, would you? Even if you were uncomfortable with the choice of clothing they told you to wear? Remembering what Sean had to say about this, we couldn't wait to hear what Skip believed, I wouldn't let someone dress me unless it was based around my current style. Otherwise I feel I would be difficult to look comfortable and carry any belief. I believe people see through this pretty easy and it would also come across that your art lacked merit too. This has confirmed our discovery about how obsession with image and fashion by musicians takes away from the music itself. Could this perhaps be directorial choice however? Pre-conceptions and judgement of others through clothing choice has been a recurrent question by the IC with a similar response each time, Do you ever judge people on what they are wearing? If so, why? Skip, though reluctantly said, was unfortunately was no anomaly, It's difficult not to take pre-conceived notions attached to particular dress senses when making first impressions. Id love to avoid this, however I also feel that one of the main reason a person creates a particular image for themselves is to give of a certain first impression. We could hardly stop skip talking with our next question, but we can't help but get a little bit excited when we get extensive answers, we asked, Do you prefer Designer clothing or High Street Brands? Which and Why? His humbled response made us nod in agreement and frown as we processed the truth within his answer, I have no real preference. Whatever looks, feels and fits well is what appeals to me. There's positives and negatives of both, designer clothing on a whole isn't accessible and way out of most people's price range, yet a lot of high street fashion is saturated, badly produced and short lived. I usually look for timeless, un branded yet quality pieces. I find it important to dress well, whatever that may be. I feel it's important to be comfortable and confident with what you wear. Whatever a person chooses to wear is exactly that, a choice. Whether the look is casual, formal or extroverted, at some point the person has been influenced to dress this way. Therefore i feel it reflects on yourself, and for many people it will be the first impression of you. And he hit the nail on the head when we finally asked him, Would you ever buy a product to better yourself in any way because they advertise that it will? eg. Hair products, face creams. When once again, he reluctantly told us, Again i'd love to say I'm immune to the effects of advertising but like a large amount of the population, whether consciously or not, products and branding is pushed on to us from all angles. Why do we buy a certain bar of soap etc, even if we aim to avoid the bigger brands and go for an 'own-brand' product, such as Tesco Value bar of soap, why are we shopping in Tesco in the first place? It seems to me that the consumerist culture is inescapable!
