Interview with Sean London
(Monday 18th November)
On Monday 18th, Sean came over to the IC base in search of some promotional photos for his band BASSn8S, what is interesting is the connection musicians have with their image, dressing in a particular way to represent who they are. We wanted to further this research and so, sat Sean down and flooded him with a series of questions. We first asked him, If your manager/record label told you to completely change your image, would you? Even if you were uncomfortable with the choice of clothing they told you to wear? Does your choice of clothing reflect the genre of your music? I style myself in rap or skater style clothing however I don't think that this reflects the genre of music. Ironically, although Sean is the rapper in BASSn8S, we believe he is trying to explain that he chooses to wear this style of clothing rather than to follow a trend. Following the theme of outfit choice, we asked sean, If your manager/record label told you to completely change your image, would you? Even if you were uncomfortable with the choice of clothing they told you to wear? Quick to answer he told us, Definitely not! I'm 6 feet and 18 stone, I definitely wouldn't look right in skinny jeans and would never wear them, everyone has clothes that suit them and everyone has clothes that don't, skinny jeans are not for me! Throughout our research, we have seen how people cross these boundaries out of choice and not just celebrities as an attention seeking statement! After the success of our street documentaries and asking intrusive questions, we tested them out on Sean; Do you ever judge people on what they are wearing? If so, why? Interestingly, Sean gave us a more detailed answer than we could have imagined, I guess I do, I wish I did, but who doesn't? When I see a girl with almost everything exposed, I just think she has no self respect, but thats going on girls that I've known in the past. What we find interesting is his disgust of seeing too much skin, with magazines such as Front Magazine, Zoo, FHM and Nuts showing women with little to nothing on. Is it any wonder why women expose themselves, when men take a liking to these magazines? We asked Sean one last question, Do you find it important to dress a certain way? If so why? For obvious reasons, Sean explained, I definitely do, if i'm performing, I want to look cool, people go by image as well as by sound with music. I even overdress to make sure i'm looking my best! Why has the music industry become so obsessed with image, there are the odd few out there, but isn't about the musical talent? Sean extended this comment with a humbled story about his childhood; Most of the clothes I buy now are throwbacks from my childhood, we didn't have a lot of money in my family so I wasn't able to buy things that I would have wanted to, however I make up for that now!
