Carnaby Culture Clash (Revisited)
(Sunday 10th November)
With fantastic results from our last visit, The Image Culture went back to Carnaby street last Sunday for a second attempt at drilling the public for some more answers to a whole new set of questions. Apart from the obvious refusal by some, the answers came easily to most people we stopped in the street, giving us much more information then we could have anticipated. Have you ever bought anything to make yourself feel better? a sense of guilt crossed the face of many our interviewees; two young Scottish girls nodded to each other and responded with, i'll treat myself if i'm feeling sad, another group of girls said, retail therapy is definitely a real thing, and a trendy looking brand scout for ASOS told us that he bought clothes and other items to look good and to make me feel better about myself. The set of responses we received are exactly what we are researching within this project, why do people want and need to buy and have items to better themselves, how far do people go? Another question we asked, which, like the previous set of interviews, divided our audience was, What is your opinion on designer clothing? A shabby-chic girl who stood out with her independence and strong opinions, stated that, it's pretty unethically sourced...sweatshops are a no-no...it's people just buying for the name. whereas a gentleman who at times became hard to question with vague answers, gave an informed response, saying that he would buy something if I like it and can afford it, stepping away from the point that people buy for the brand and stating that is more about what the clothes look like themselves.
