Carnaby Culture Clash
(Saturday 26th October)
On Saturday, The Image Culture researchers, hit the town and interrogated the general public for much needed answers about the fashion industry. With a friendly atmosphere and a welcoming crowd, we powered through several interviews asking a variety of questions which challenged and sparked the intellect and cultured minds of each of our interviewees. We opened the inquisitive interviews with the choice, Designer clothing or high-street brands?, which immediately divided opinions due to circumstance- the student couple without a pause for breath, chose high-street brands because designer is overpriced, stuff on the catwalk is not really wearable and the suave Liberty employee trio - of course - chose designer clothing because it's of a better quality another question we asked was if they believed many products were falsely advertised, all agreed that they were, with one member of the public quoting that he believes people still buy these products as a form of reassurance/ in hope that the product will work. This urged The Image Culture's obsession with consumerism and exposed queries about why as a society, we are brainwashed into buying products in the hope that they do as they say, without 100% proof! A question that gave a couple of interesting, controversial and hilarious results was the question; Define a hipster . A German, international student who I quote said, I think they're a bit gay, was not enamoured by the hipster clothing or culture when questioned, however, an appropriately dressed bearded guy with a bobble hat, leaning on his 'fixie' bike, just pointed at himself and claimed that others describe him as a hipster because of the clothing he wears, he believed that hipsters were people that care about what they wear, and I dont, however had clearly thought about his outfit choice.
